        The Shema Möbius strip, designed by Malka, combines the scientific discovery of the only object known to have only one side and one edge, the Möbius Strip, with the ancient Hebrew words of the She ma.

        Discovered by August Ferdinand Möbius, the father of topology, more than 100 years ago, the shape that has only one side and one edge is known as a Möbius Strip.

        One Sabbath morning in 1980, I was drinking coffee and eating challah and butter while reading the Torah portion for that week, prior to going to services...my Shabbat morning ritual!  I stopped reading, looked up into space as my mind jumped ahead of me.  Suddenly, from out of the blue, two thoughts came to me simultaneously, yet each from a different direction.  I can still see them.  From the left, as if having been propelled directly to me through space, the long forgotten idea of the Möbius Strip came from nowhere!  At the same time, but from the right side came the idea of "The Shema."  Instantly, the two ideas met in my head and became one.  Before my brain could grasp and my mind articulate, I knew inside...intuitively, something profound had just occurred.  It felt like a bolt of lightening had struck deep in every cell and an idea flashed into being, in no time, from nowhere.

        I first sculptured the idea in sterling silver which I called the WONDER OF ONENESS; I then made it in gold and called it THE SHEMA.

        Five years later, the new science of Chaos and Order, wholeness and harmony began to break down barriers between every discipline in science.  A unifying paradigm emerged called Strange Attractors, an organizing principle surprisingly found pervasive throughout nature, even found in stock market fluctuations, economics and business.  At the same time, particle physicists in their ever narrowing search for the origin of the universe and the origin of life in sub-nuclear particles began to raise questions of non-existence and nothingness.  I knew, intuitively, that science and spirituality were unifying.

        It was not until April 29, 1991, eleven years after my first insight, that I realized, also in a flash, that my SHEMA represents and symbolizes what I had years earlier called the "SuperUnified Theory of all Forces." That is, the union of the two greatest forces in the Universe: Physical and Spiritual. Here, for the first time, with the Spiritual proclamation of oneness engraved on the physical representation of oneness, the Möbius...itself likely to be a Strange Attractor, fusion occurs between science and religion.

        Mindboggling as that might be, on July 11, 1991, yet another equally mindboggling fact was called to my attention.  The most significant prayer in Judaism, the "Sh'ma," (Deuteronomy 6:4) is identical to the words of the first commandment in Christianity (Mark 12:29).  Thus, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One" has great significance in both Judaism and Christianity.  THE SHEMA therefore, is an interfaith symbol of harmony shining through diversity, perhaps a prelude-of-peace to the coming years 2000 and the 21st century, a century we might call. . . THE AGE OF ONENESS.
